2023-2024 Monarch Population Update
This winter, monarchs occupied 1.79 hectares of forest in Mexico, a 99% increase from last year’s historic low of 0.90 hectares. Eight overwintering colonies were recorded, and while the area is still below long-term averages, this year marks a remarkable population rebound.
In the past, monarchs have shown similar recoveries when favorable weather follows poor conditions. The 2.0x increase this season aligns with other strong rebound years, showing the monarch’s resilience when environmental conditions improve.
Despite growing climate instability, this rebound is a hopeful reminder that monarchs can recover quickly when supported by suitable habitat and weather.
