The Crabtree Farms Monarch Waystation is a long-term community habitat restoration project dedicated to creating a thriving home for monarch butterflies and other pollinators. Designed as a living demonstration garden, the Waystation showcases how native plants can provide essential food and breeding habitat while inspiring visitors to create pollinator-friendly spaces in their own communities.
Located at Crabtree Farms in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the Waystation combines conservation, education, and community involvement to demonstrate the important role native plants play in supporting healthy ecosystems.
Why Crabtree Farms?
Crabtree Farms has a long tradition of connecting people with sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, and hands-on learning. The Monarch Waystation complements that mission by demonstrating how native plants can restore habitat, support biodiversity, and provide critical resources for monarch butterflies and countless other pollinators.
As the garden matures, it will become an educational destination where visitors can explore native plants, observe pollinators throughout the growing season, and discover simple ways to create habitat in their own landscapes.
Project Goals
- Create a thriving Monarch Waystation using regionally appropriate native plants.
- Establish season-long nectar sources for butterflies and other pollinators.
- Increase monarch breeding habitat by planting a diversity of native milkweed species.
- Demonstrate sustainable habitat restoration practices.
π± Latest Update
This spring, volunteers planted a diverse collection of native milkweeds, wildflowers, and grasses throughout the raised bed. Like many new native plantings, the first year has focused on helping these young plants become established while managing aggressive weed growth.
One of the most important lessons in native habitat restoration is that beautiful meadows are not created overnight. During the first few years, much of the growth occurs below the surface as native plants establish deep, healthy root systems that support a resilient ecosystem for years to come.
Throughout the summer, volunteers are focusing on improving long-term weed management by installing cardboard and mulch around the native plantings. These improvements will reduce weed pressure, improve growing conditions, and help the garden continue developing into the thriving Monarch Waystation we envisioned from the beginning.
