Adding a water source to your butterfly garden can attract more butterflies. A puddling station provides both water and minerals that butterflies need.
Many species of butterflies congregate on wet sand and mud to partake in “puddling,” drinking water, and extracting minerals from damp puddles.
Create a Puddling Station
Materials:
- A 12, 14, or 16-inch Terracotta Clay Saucer
- Small bag of Play Sand
- Small bag of Compost Manure
- Sea Salt
- Small rocks or pebbles for landing pads
- Water
Instructions:
- Fill the clay saucer ¾ full with sand.
- Mix 1/2 cup of compost manure into the sand and blend well.
- Add 1 teaspoon of sea salt to the sand and compost mixture.
- Add a few small rocks or pebbles to provide landing pads for butterflies.
- Add water to make the mixture moist and form a shallow puddle in a low spot.
- Check the station every couple of days and add water as needed to keep it moist.
- Replace the mixture monthly to maintain a clean environment.
- Optionally, add slices of fruit to attract butterflies.
By following these steps, you can create a welcoming puddling station that supports butterflies and enhances your garden. Happy gardening!
